Politics, Politics, Politics

Wow, he's done it. Barack Obama will become the first African American man to run for president of the United States of America. How awesome is that?! As a minority woman, I had a hard time deciding whether Obama or Hilary would better represent me. Now, it seems like my mind has been made up for me. I never thought in my life time that I would see a woman or even an African American man run for the White House. I think it's fabulous.

But, as a minority, I'm scared for Mr. Obama. I have experienced racism on a first hand basis. I have been followed around in stores because the clerk thought I was going to steal something simply because I'm hispanic. I've had people tell me to my face to go back to Mexico because I was speaking "Mexican" and they didn't like it. I've had people call me "Pepper Belly" and "Wet Back" because of my dark skin and brown eyes. Sometime people assume that I'm not college educated or intelligent because of the color of my skin or because I'm so small. I've had people treat me like an idiot because they had never met an educated Mexican before. I know what it's like to feel the presence of racism. I just hope Mr. Obama doesn't have to face the ugliness of racism head on. I hope as a country we have come beyond that. I hope that MY COUNTRY, AMERICA, is civilized enough to be open to his ideas and thoughts. I don't think everyone has to agree with him. But, I just hope that those Americans that call me a stupid Mexican or Pepper Belly, open their eyes and give change a chance.

I completely agree with you!!! What's crazy is I live with a blind-faith Republican. You know...doesn't matter what the Republicans stand for, he's just going to vote Republican. I'm sure you guessed that we NEVER discuss politics seeing as I'm as liberal as they come :)
